What is Royal Jelly?

 

Royal jelly, also called Bee Milk, thick, white, nutritious substance fed to bee larvae.Secreted from glands in the heads of worker bees, it is fed to worker and drone larvae until the third day of life and to queen bee larvae throughout the larval period. Its components include water, proteins, carbohydrates, and various trace elements (mineral salts) and vitamins. It is rich in pantothenic acid, a vitamin substance aiding metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and also contains vitamin B6, or pyridoxine, important in metabolism of amino acids.

 

Royal jelly is harvested by manually removing one to three day old bee larvae from the brood cells and then removing the royal jelly with a pipet or small spatula. Royal jelly should be refrigerated to between 0 - 5ºC within hours of harvesting and stored in dark glass containers. The shelf life is about 18 months for refrigerated royal jelly products and 24 months for frozen products.Freeze-dried royal jelly can be kept for years.

 

Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses

Because of their specialized nutrition, queen bees differ from workers in several ways. The queens are approximately twice the size, they lay approximately 2,000 eggs a day (female worker bees are infertile), and they live 5 to 8 years (approximately 40 times longer than worker bees). It is used in traditional medicine for longevity in Europe and Asia. Royal jelly has been sold as a skin tonic and hair growth stimulant.
